Can a licensed nurse work in the OR?

next summer i will be a licensed nurse and i would like to work in the operating room. how can i go about doing that?

RN's work in the OR frequently (should know I have had more than my fair share of surgeries - 3 of them awake) and there were a minimum of 2 RN's in there with me (more when it was more serious). Also, my sister is an RN and she works in OR and loves it. You just need training for that area (just like you would for any area you want to go into).

Spend a year on a med/surg floor before you even think about going into a specialty.
At one time, a year doing med/surg was a set-in-stone requirement in most hospitals.

You need to do practical internship in the OR and usually that means making friends with OR staff doctors and nurses.

To Start volunteer your time to observe and learn if your hospital doesn't offer practicals for the OR. Some don't because of the risk involved in new or nurses in training.

Making a good grade and showing attention to detail will go a long way in getting your skills noticed for OR rotations but these jobs typically go to trained professionals with years of experience and specialized training. Do a little research with the OR staff find out what classes they have taken and ask how you can become specialized. Staff will enjoy the attention and hsould be happy to help but I suspect you cannot get this type of job right out of school without more training and experience but good luck in your career.
