Does anybody know a site where I could download videos on "operating room nursing"?

I'm looking for a site where I could download videos on the operating room where there is actual passing of instruments, sponge, needle, and instrument counting. PS it must be downloadable in Windows Media Player. Please please please. I really need it. I would really appreciate any positive response. Thank you.uu

try www.ast.org or www.aorn.org I know ast.org has videos that you can buy, but I don't know if they have anything you can download.

You could also google "surgical techniques" or "surgical technology" and use the video feature of google. To be honest, there's not a lot to see, especially in counts. We do counts as a team - the nurse and the surgical technologist do them together, and we have to agree that the counts are correct. My personal technique is to count blades first, they're the easiest. Then we count sponges, usually laps and ray-tex. I count needles last, and then instruments, if necessary. When we're doing counts, I always count in a certain order, to make sure I don't count the same item twice or make sure I don't miss anything. I count what's on the field first, that is, what the doctor is using at the moment. Count the items on my Mayo stand next, then my back table. Then when we're counting sponges, we count the ones we've already thrown off the field last. If a count is incorrect, the first thing you do is recount. If it's still incorrect, you announce it to the doctor and everybody looks for the item till you find it.

When passing instruments, sometimes the doctor will ask for what he wants, but many times, the surgical technologist knows what he will want next and he/she can simply put it in his hand when the doc puts his hand out. The biggest rules for passing instruments are to give them to him in the position he will be using them in, and safety first. For example, the fastest way to have an instrument thrown at you is to pass him a needle holder with the needle loaded backwards. *grin* Every new tech passes a needle loaded backwards once. That's all it takes to learn how to do it correctly. LOL

If you can't find anything, email me. I work in surgery, and I may be able to arrange a fake video for you. We can't video an actual surgery because of HIPPA regulations, but my coworkers may agree to let me video them doing counts and demonstrating instruments before a surgery.

Web MD and discoverychannel.com

Try OR Live, though they focus on the surgery itself, not so much on the nursing part. If you are in a nursing class, you might be able to find a better site.
