NURSING SHORTAGE NOT AFFECTING OPERATING ROOMS.(survey data)I NEED YOR REACTION!?

A nationwide survey of 401 operating room (OR) directors by The Gallup Organization for Surgical Information Systems, Alpharetta, Georgia, found that the nursing shortage is not affecting ORs. The survey found that U.S. hospitals, on average, have only 1.4 OR nurse positions unfilled. More than half of the respondents report no unfilled positions, 20 percent report only one unfilled position, and 29 percent report two or more unfilled positions.

Turnover also appears to be a minor issue in U.S. ORs, with turnover averaging 2.42 nurses in the past 12 months. Compared with the average number of nursing positions reported by the respondents, this turnover rate is less than 12 percent. The survey found 29 percent of the respondents had no turnover in their permanent nursing staff, 50 percent reported three or fewer nurses left their hospital, and 21 percent reported four or more nurses left their hospital. Looking ahead, 51 percent of the respondents cited a lack of qualified nurses as their biggest concern for the future of OR nursing.
