Is a pediatric nurse and a pediatric nurse practitioner the same profession? If not, what are the differences?

Is a pediatric nurse and a pediatric nurse practitioner the same profession? If not, what are the differences?

No.

A pediatric nurse is a nurse and cannot make treatment decisions. He or she must get treatment orders from a physician.

A pediatric nurse practitioner has had additional training beyond a bachelor's degree in nursing, usually has at least a master's degree, and can legally function at much the same level as a physician. In the near future, nurse practitioners will be required to have doctorates.

A nurse practitioner has an advanced practice degree, and has many more privileges than a regular RN. Many of them can write prescriptions, and see patients just like the doctor does. He/she must practice under the supervision of a doctor.

A NP and a RN are two very different type of professions.
A NP (also called a Physicians Assistant- P.A. for short) Has a B.A in applied science which is six years of schooling. Opposed to the 2-2 1/2 yrs to become an RN.
Also, a P.A. can write scripts were a RN cannot. Furthermore a NP makes a lot more money.

Dr po- just want to clear something up.

PAs are NOT the same as NPs. Physician Assistants are trained in a medicine oriented program. NPs come from a nursing background. The approach is very different. Although we have similar privileges we are in no way the same.
