Am I entitled to Tax refund?

I started working in June 2004 on a temp.insurance number for 6 weeks in a private hospital as a staff nurse. Just don麓t wanna end up paying money back.

you need to check that you did not pay emergency tax for those 6 weeks. Do your payslips show an X after your tax code eg 478L X. This means you are likely to have paid too much tax.

To reclaim you need to get together all your taxable income for the period 6 April 2004 to 5 April 2005 (P60s or P45s, Bank Interest, etc and send it in to the tax office which deals with your current employer with a covering letter.

If you advise a temp nino was used the revenue can make sure you are credited for the NI payments you made.

Contact your local tax office they will sort it out for you.

If you have paid too much tax-you will get it back

Ask your present employer or your local tax office.

You should have been taxed at what is known as an emergency rate which is usually set high. You then should have paid tax according to your earnings week by week.
The only refund that you are likely to get is what you may have paid over the rate you should have been on.
Talk to the tax man they are always helpful to individuals.
They also have a tax help line where given the information the adviser will tell you if you are entitled to a refund. No names and no face to face contact.
However you should always expect to pay tax on what you earn, I do.

The fact that you had a temporary national insurance number would not necessarily mean that you paid too much tax. That would depend on the tax coding that the hospital gave you.

Your own national insurance is unique to you. Any contributions that you make are set on your record for future benefit/ pension entitlement. By using a temporary number these contributions cannot be automatically recorded against your personal record.

Contact your local tax office they should tell you.

your local tax office will advise you.
