Nursing Homes

The nonprofit sector contributes significantly to the administration of nursing homes. Though there are only a few non-profit nursing homes, mostly run by religious congregations, according to the Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD), they account for 95 percent of all existing nursing homes or residential care facilities nationwide. Significant contribution in this area is made by the Coalition of Services for the Elderly (contact: Ma. Socorro Sarabia; www.cosephil.org; e-mail: cose@cosephil.org). COSE works with the elderly poor in urban or rural settings in the Philippines. Currently, there are 21 member organizations of the Coalition that meet regularly. COSE has 43 community based programs for the elderly (CBPEs) in Luzon and has office in Davao. Its four major social events for the elderly include: a Christmas Party, a Trip to the beach, Sports Fest, and the Sampung Ulirang Nakatatanda or the 鈥淭en Outstanding Elderly Awards.鈥?Its partners include students, professionals and donors.
