Would You put your mother or father in a nursing home if they couldn't take care of them selves. ?

In the Country I'm from ( Italy ) We take care of our own as our parents took care of us as children, why do Americans neglect to care for their own parents in this country ? We only have our parents on earth for so long and those that leave their parents in the nursing home seem to think they are already gone and have nothing to do with them after that.
don't people believe in private nursing care in their home, Who's making the money for them being treated this way. I don't get this why people would treat their own family this way !? would you do this to your own Mother and Father out of hate or out of Love.?

I would NEVER put my folks in a home if they couldn't take care of themselves. I would take them in. They raised me to love my family no matter what.

yea cuz the children have to make their own living and take care of themselves and their children so they don't time to take care of their elderly parents.

Never. Thou shall honor thy mother and thy father.

we would have to have someone take care of them when we go to work..got to pay the bills too

only if they wanted to go

if u cant take care of them yes it would be the best thing to do

I won't do that, here in the Philippines we don't really put our parents in a nursing home. There are some though... the ones that neglect their own parents. I would take care of them, when I go to work I could hire someone to look after them.

No way. I've seen how people are treated in some of those nursing homes and I could never put my parents in there.

If they were of sound mind and body I would ask them what they would want to do. They raised me. I have love and respect for them. I would do what they wish.

It does look pretty unfeeling that so many elders are put away into homes, particularly when the quality of care in those places is often questionable. I took care of my Mom for the last 3 years she lived. I had to quit my job; fortunately her retirement annuity was just enough for both of us to live on. It was not easy. But for many people, I think the responsibility and the confinement of caring for an older relative is just more than they think they can handle. Its a shame we have lost this custom of caring for our own. Americans who have a generous income, for the most part, really are kinda spoiled.

I don't think that most Americans dispose of their parents. I think that most people are uncapable of seeing their once vibrant parents slowly dying right before them. Now it would be nice if we all could afford the time and money to fully care for our ailing parents but sometimes that is not feasible. A lot of this not only has to do with the people themselves but private corporations and the federal government are also to blame. Our goverment barely helps out the elderly as it is. Social security is a joke and will pay next to nothing to help out although these same people have paid into this fund for years. Private corps. just will not allow the families of these people the proper time off of work to care for their parents. Too much time off will get somebody fired and then will where they all be? When my father reaches that age I hope I would be able to care for him but I barely earn enough now to care for myself. So it's not a lack of love thing, it's a lack of money and time thing.

NEVER..they took care of me when I did not know how to walk or to talk soo y would I do that 4? I would take care of them if its the last thing I ever do.

There comes a time, when you have no choice
If you Love them, and want them to get the
proper medical attention they need. There
are times when you have to - You don't want
to but it is for thier own good & yours too.
I've seen it break families up,anguing over
who's going to do what. You have to work for
you & your family, everyone should pitch in
but they don't. Unless you have been though
it don't say what you won't do until the time
comes around. Unless you are rich & can stay
home,or can hire a full time nurse what else
can you do - Home care is as expensive as a
Nursing home sometimes (VISIT OFTEN AS YOU CAN)

of course not

i try not to be judgemental about things i dont understand and try to understand them.
with that as a back drop, i would like to say i am proudly African and nursing homes are not common here. i actually do not know of any in my country.
so NO i would not take my old folks there cos 1st, there is none. and 2nd, i work from home and would love to take care of them myself, not becos i love them more than X does cos he put his own folks in a home, but bcos i will prefer to express my love for them in a personal way. and i have the time and maids.
abroad however, homes exist, and i would want to believe that most people that send their parents there do it cos its the best for the parents.
in these homes, they have other old people (same kind), that love the same things etc. would it not be better for the parents to be there carrying on a normal life, than alone at home, till you get back from work.
there is always a balance and this time the balance is the motive the child has for putting the parents there.
if its bcos it a burden to care for them, that would be bad and remember, what goes around comes around.
but if its for the good of the parent then all is well.

I would try my best to take care of them; but if it is impossible to do so in all way, in the end I would take them to the nursing home because of their happy and secured life. I would meet everyday with them and take care of their each and every kind of problems and needs or anything else.

Thanks for your question because it made me think about this so important matter!

Never. My parents have told me that going 2 a nursing home is their worst fear. I have seen how people are treated there and some of those nurses sometimes don't really treat the people very well.

never they took care of me why not take care if them

No never.. I will take care of them as they took care of us when we were younger. Its the only way to repay them for the hardships they have to face just for us to have a better future.

In America when we have parents that have diesases such as Alzheimers and they become people we don't even know as they progress into the illness. We know it is better to have someone to care for them 24 hours a day that are trained and know how to handle their angry and combative ways. This is loving them better than if we tried to care for them ourselves and suffered broken bones and fear of them. Also when they have a stroke or something that makes them unable to care for themselves and there is only so many hours in a day and so many hands on a body to do all the things needed for home and family there is not much left to tend to the needs of a helpless parent.
If you place your parent in a nursing facility then don't foret about them! My grandmother was in a nursing home for 5 years after her massive stroke because my Mother had Lupus and could not handle her. She would snesak ouside and turn on the stove under pans of grease and leave themetc. My Mom couldn't get around and care for her and they decided it was best if she was somewhere with 24 hour a day caring. My uncles and aunts cousins and my parents and myself went to see her on a regualar basis. She had a viistor everyday. On the weekends one family member took her home on Saturday for the day and she was well treated and she actually saw more of her combined family then she would have if she were at my parents house.
Sometimes it is abused and for this I am ashamed of the cruelty and selfishness of some people but it is this way with all things. A few make it ugly and mean for the world to look at and condemn. If you could see the wonders these places can do with older folks you wouldn't think us so cruel.

If I had the means and ability, to do it myself I would not put my parents in one. I always promised them I would never do that to them. I would take care of them myself or hire someone I knew VERY well to do it if I couldn't.
