Who is allowed to serve food to patients with Alzheimers in a nursing home? |
The home says only registered nurses are allowed to do so, and they are always so shorthanded that it takes forever from the time the food is brought to the area to the time the patients actually get to eat. RN's, LPN's, STNA's and family members if allowed by the POA (power of attorney). RNs, LPNs, and STNAs. qualified nursing staff of medical Hospital Each state varies and even individual homes can vary on their requirements but, in general, to feed patients of any kind really just requires a steady hand. Obviously this can change depending on the environment (such as level 3 Alzheimer's you'll want a couple big burly guys along as these patients can get violent). But requiring an RN to feed patients? That's a bit over the top. As a former CNA we was able to serve food to the patients. But we was to make sure the patients eat at least 50% of the food. If for some reason that the patients did not then thats when the nurse would step in and try to feed that patient. I found out if you let that patient have there way and you set yourself in there setting they would eat more. So for example if that patient is calling you moma pretend you are the moma let them think that you are and they will be happy but if you set there and say no im not your moma then of course they not going to let you help them in no way. So there forth you have to let them set you in the way they want you basically. Hope this helps.. The nursing homes that I know of, here in Texas, allow a Certified Nurse Aid to feed patients. Any patient, regardless of what the patient diagnosed with. |
