Attention nurses! what were the things you wish you knew during the 1st 100 days of your job?

I am a newly registered nurse and just so curious to know your answers.

As an ex-RN I wish I had known the following...

- That no matter how hard you try to be nice some people will still complain
- That when the chips are down you can't always count on your colleagues
- Document EVERYTHING!
- Doing your job well is threatening to some other nurses
- Scotch and coke takes the edge off after a long day!

Doctors are just people like we are, use the bathroom the same way we do, so don't be intimidated by them--stand up for yourself AND your patients. Be a patient advocate, no matter how much you want to walk away. You have a right to tell the doctor, "I refuse to let you talk to me that way--I am a professional, too. When you are ready to talk in a calmer tone of voice, call me back," and hang up, or walk away. It works.
