What type of gross things do registered nurses do?

What type of gross things do registered nurses do?

As a nurse of "several" years let me tell you that you do not even want to think about what nurses do.
1. Remove impactions (impactions are like severe constipation and are removed by running your finger into the rectum and digitaly removing the feces.)
2. Clean up bloody stool (bloody stool is usually like rotten diarrhea mixed with foul smelling blood, the odor lingers with you all day)
3. Clean puke off of themselves after helping someone up to have a bowel movement on a bedside toilet and that person accidently puking on them.
4. Using suction (like a mini-vac) to remove phlem and mucous from someone's tracheotomy (that hole some people have to get in their neck from smoking cigarrettes), then having that person cough and the mucous plug get shot across the room and splattering on the wall on the other side of the room.
5. Following the trail of diarrhea down the hall to locate the alzheimers patient who is looking for "their" bathroom.
6. Assisting a physician with a pap smear on a 400lb lady who has had this foul smelling milky discharge from her vagina for the past 3 weeks, but didn't notice it until she was having her bath 4 days ago.
7. Changing a dressing on a gangrenous wound that now, not only is it totally rotten with decayed flesh, but hey a fly has decided to lay eggs in it creating some lovely maggots in the wound.
8. Assisting in an OR when a mutilated limb must be amputated, and being handed that amputated and mutilated limb
for "disposal".
9. Enemas, bowel preps, shaving "places" for surgery, drawing blood, starting IV's, wiping bottoms of people of all ages, wiping noses, bathing people of all ages, shapes, and sizes, the list goes on and on..................
10. The grossest thing registered nurses do is (drum roll please) picking up our measely checks after hours and hours of the aforementioned bliss.

Who does nursing for the money anyway?

You really don't want to know.

What a silly insensitive question, nurses do what ever they have to do in their roll as a care giver.

I am a RN and I can stand a lot of stuff, but the worse for me is respiratory things..or bile from the stomach. I can change bed pans, start IVs etc..but the lungers are what get me the most. Are you thinking of becoming a nurse? Overall I enjoy it a lot. Many more positives than negatives about the job.

Nurses do many things that ppl would consider gross. It's part of the job, and it takes some special ppl to be nurses.

Good question. It's one people don't ask before they go to school to become one. It depends on what kind of job you have.

1. Clean up blood
2. Give enemas
3. Give douches
4. Clean up poop-Ob nurse
5. Clean trachea tubes and holes, lots of mucous

The list goes on!

Dr. Kenfeelgood had the answer you were looking for until he got to the last one. If he feels that way, I hope he is never my nurse.
