I'm thinking of changing my major from Registered Nursing to Forensic Science?

I am currently a Senior Certified Medical Assistant at my practice so I have hands on experience with patient care from critical care to OB/GYN. I have always been interested in forensics the challenges and experience that is expected in this field is exciting to me. What inside informative information can be given on why you selected Forensics or Nursing?

Hi, I really wanted to study forensic science as well, then I found out that you actually had to go through police training and actually be on the force for a year I think. So I ended up choosing radiology. I'm not telling you not to go for it, if your up for doing that than by all means study forensic science. It's up to you. Good Luck hope it works out for the best!

Your story is amazing, because those are the same two fields I'm interested in. I am an RN and have been for 28 years, and I really like it. But I've thought several times that forensics would also be a fascinating field. I haven't looked into changing or combining them because the past few years I've been busy with family needs, not ready to go back to school. I am now the nurse at juvenile detention, so maybe I will combine the two someday after all!

I'm working on my masters in forensic science. I don't really have a well thought out reason for why I chose it other than the fact that I find it fascinating from both a scientific and philosophical standpoint. (When I say philosophical standpoint I mean, in the most basic way I can think of, the idea that one can derive information about a person from what is left behind, or in essence what a person is not.) Essentially I just like the idea of using my brain and science to outsmart people who think they can get away with hurting others. I really couldn't imagine anything else I would like to do. I'm not sure what your schooling has been but a crime lab will usually require you to have a degree in chemistry at the least so that is something to think about. With your background, have you ever thought about Forensic nursing? My best friend is a doctor and her mother is a huge figure in the forensic nursing community. She started one of the major SANE programs. That might also be something to look into. Good luck to you!

Oh, and just so you know, you do not have to be on the police force to be a forensic scientist. In large cities, with a large police force and crime lab, the actual crime scene technicians are often trained police, but most people who work in crime labs are not.

I would take a good look at salaries. Forensics is the new "cool" trend, and for the most part, the careers are not nearly as exciting as they seem, and the pay is pretty low. I spent some time at a medical examiners office before all the TV shows made people excited, and although it was fascinating, it wasn't what I wanted for a career.

I'm not trying to say that you got this idea from CSI, just that a lot of other people have.

I THINK YOU SHOULD GO FOR IT ,IT'S ABOUT WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY AND SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD FIELD AND A GROWING ONE AT THAT I HAVE CHANGE QUITE A FEW TIMES AND THAT'S HOW YOU DO UNTIL YOU FIND THE EXACT ONE AND WITH EXPERIENCE YOU HAVE IT SHOULD BENEFIT YOU GOOD LUCK!
