Why in the Nursing profession are Aides looked down upon by the Registered Nurses and others in management? |
Nurses Aides are all part of nursing but are viewed as less than by some of the nurses. Why? Before I answered this question I asked my wife(who has been a LPN for 15 years) a question. Are the CNA's (certified nursing assistants) the backbone of nursing? Her reply was yes! But there is a two part answer to this so bear with me....1)yes, they are the most important part of nursing because they are the ones that have constant contact with the patients and will notice things sooner than the LPN's or the RN's.Contrary to what some RN's or LPN's might write you it is a good team of CNA's that will make or break a nurse. And what it comes down to is how well that RN or LPN treats their CNA's.It's not much different in the work force that good employees make make a boss look good or bad.But also someone wrote about their pay and that is true too. With CNA's being the backbone they are the ones in the trenches getting there hands dirty(and we all know with what) and they are treating sadly they way they are for reason #2...it comes down to education.I said earlier that my wife has been an LPN for 15 years, well I can't tell you how many times she has heard the statement...RN stands for "real nurse" even one who has just gotten out of school. So there you have it...and thereal solution to the problem is for ALL nurses to realise how important the CNA's are not just a handfull. The best RN's you will find are exactly the ones who started as CNA's because they know what the road is like. Because RN's think theyre hot **** and are better than us. They think were dumbasses!! My wife is an RN and I can tell you without a doubt that she appreciates the good Aides. They do have a problem with Aides that don't do what they're supposed to and end up creating problems/more work for the RNs. You're correct when you say that Aides are a part of nursing but remember that they are NOT nurses. Nurses have spent a lot of money and time on their education and have their license on the line every day. You can't compare Aides to RNs but when they work together, both benefit. I have a relative who is a nurse and works in a nursing home. She told me that some of the RNs look down on the LPNs and some of both of them look down on the aides. When I asked her why she said because there are SOME aides who are aides because they can't find any other work due to illiteracy, drug or alchohol problems, or some kind of mental or emotional disorder. She said that nursing homes don't pay aides enough money for the work that they do so they are constantly losing people and so have to hire people that wouldn't be hired anyplace else. Those are the ones that are kind of looked down on, but no more so than they would be anywhere else. I have been an LPN for 12.5 years and I always appreciate a good co-workers, and paying for ones education is not an excuse to be anal. CNA,s had to pay for school too. In evry profession, the upper echelons tend to look down upon the lower levels. This is not unique to Nursing only. But you can do something to be free of this trouble. For one thing, register yourself for a TN/RN course and seek to do practical training at the same Hospital and under the same Nursing Superintendent. At least get the same Hospital. When they know that you are only a few months away from being on par with them, the snide remarks and disdain will give place to some sort of affinity and some of them will actually start guiding you for the course. |
