For registered nurses only?

Are you always on call?!
and does interrupt with anything
important for example maybe your child's
birthday or anything else? With time does the on call
stop?

I'm never on call. I work in an ICU, scheduled days. I do work every other weekend. If i need a day off for a birthday, i just ask and i usually get it without a problem.
I think you are thinking about doctors. Now, they seem like they are always on call. Poor dr's get called a lot.

I'm not an RN but I do work in a hospital. An on call nurse is not always on call, they rotate a schedule. Such positions would be the operating room (normally on sundays or midnight emergents) or cardiac cath lab (weekends/holidays and evenings). As the other person said, when you need a day off you normally get it.

I am not on call through my regular job, but I was asked to be a part of a tem that handles needle sticks & other occupational exposures after hours. So once a month or so, I carry a pager & have to respond to any events. I canhandle any of the issues over the phone, but it can be disruptive. I am compensated for being on call. Most nurses do not have to be on call. Some nurses who work in places like OR, recovery room, endoscopy, etc. may have to be on call.

very few nurses are on call these days
and it is certain positions such as surgery nurses
and management positions
don't worry about it
i have been in health care for over 20 years
and have never had an on call position
