What is the Governing Body for U.K. Social Workers? Do they have to be registered like Doctors and Nurses?

Doctors and Nurses have to be registered centrally before they can practice. The General Medical Council controls and can strike doctors off the register. The Nursing and Midwifery Council does the same for those professions. So is there a similar statutary disciplinary body for social workers?

Yes social workers have a governing body too, they have to be registered with the General Social Care Council (GSCC).

It is illegal to call yourself a social worker until you are registered with the above, getting the degree only gives you the qualifacations needed, you cannot practice until you are registered or prove that registration is taking place (for newly qualified Social workers)

visit community care magazine online - they often report social workers being reprimanded and/or removed from the regisiter.http://www.communitycare.co.uk... Report It

Not sure about the governing body, but you now have to be qualified to say that you are a social worker...otherwise you are classed as a support worker. Only found that out from a social worker today!

If you need to speak to a Social Workers Employerr your best contacting the County Council concerned.
