what a registered nurse does..

please put it in list form..for the hourly day

ex.
1pm-.........
2 pm- ......
etc.

thank you

it is very difficult to answer your question as what you do varies with what type of facility you work in and what your staff position is and to predict what you are doing at specific times because any emergency can throw everything and everyone off

what you do in a hospital can be vastly different from a nursing home, clinic, visiting nurse school nurse etc.
you have to be more specific
also your responsibilities vary with your position i.e.-
nurse manager
head nurse
staff nurse
team leader etc. and what department or unit you work in
you can be giving meds
start iv's
hanging and mixing iv's
giving tube feeds
inserting and flushing tubes
drawing blood
suctioning
doing ekg,s
wound care and dressings
checking pacemakers
doing documentation
checking blood glucose levels
doing staff or doctors rounds
prepping pts. for surgery
making out staff assignments
monitoring that staff is doing their assignment properly
monitoring the safety of all patients at all times to prevent injuries
monitoring patients at meal time to insure correct diet and adequate intake of foods and hydration
maintaining correct fluid intake for those on fluid restrictions
monitoring cardiac monitors
monitor patients for adverse reactions to medications
patient care
responsibility for actions of all LPN'S and Nursing assistance working under her /his supervision
adhering to all the policies and procedures of the facility and to the nurses code of conduct
monitoring lab values
attending staff meetings
giving and taking report
calling doctors or families as needed
ordering pharmacy stock supplies
taking blood pressures pulse and respiration's
doing intake and outputs
patient teaching
doing admissions and discharges
responding to cardiac and or respiratory arrests
initiating and updating pt. care plans
attending family/interdisciplinary quarterly meetings
and the list goes on and on
some work 7am-3pm 3-11 11-7
some work 7am-7pm 7pm-7am
some work per diem or part time
some job share
some are floaters
you usually have to work every other weekend
get a certain amount of personal days sick days and holiday time a year( to make up for the holidays you have to work)

RN'S USUALLY START WITH 4 WEEKS VACATION A YEAR and can go to 5 weeks after usually 4-5 years
some give back unused sick day pay at the end of the year and some a uniform allowence
some are union some not if they are you pay union dues

I have to agree that there is no one schedule that all nurses adhere to. If you're thinking of staff nurses, say in Med-Surg, it's a 12-hr day. You can work 7a-7p or 7p-7a. You show up, clock in and get your patient assignment and get report from the outgoing nurse or nurses who had your assignment before you. Some places have recorded report. I don't care for this as I can't ask questions. My facility has walking rounds, so report is given on the way to and inside each patient room and I'm able to view the condition of my patients, the room and all equipment as I get report. And I can ask questions. Med passes are 3 times a day, basically at 0900, 1200 and 1800. Some meds may be written as 0800, 1000, 1300, 1400 and 1700 but you lump them in with the others.

If you have recultures, you do those. If your patient needs a KUB for GT placement, you give the gastrografin (X-ray contrast), you give injections, draw blood as ordered and start IVs as ordered and monitor. You oversee the CNAs and give direction. If you have vent patients, you suction as needed, replace inner cannulas, trach ties, drain sponges as needed and give breathing treatments as needed or as scheduled if RT isn't slotted for these. You replace NGTs as needed and as scheduled, Foleys are placed as needed and as scheduled. There are chest tubes, rectal tubes, traction, blah, blah, blah. You chart, chart, chart.

This is all I'm going to write. There's a lot that we do but each day can be different. The only things that don''t change are what I wrote in the first paragraph. There's no "hourly" schedule.
