There are reasons to pick An AAS vs a BSN, but you should look into that as a separate issue, or discuss these with nurses in your area.

Having been in the San Antonio area for many years I have worked with nurses from all of these programs and find all the schools produce competent nurses.

This applies to anywhere in the U.S. also:

Good luck to you!

There are 2 yr ( Associate's of nursing) and 4 yr (BSN) programs. There is an entrance exam given to see if you are a candidate and selection is based on entrance exam scores, references and high school transcripts. But, before all that you have to finish the required courses that the program you apply to requires and it varies from program to program but expect English, and hardcore math and science. The nursing program will entail anatomy and phyisiology, microbiology / chem, varying math, pharmacology, varying psychology courses, etc. Then you will do clinicals for a certain amount of time, where you work ( without pay) in several different type settings from nursing homes to hospice. You will wipe butts, draw blood, give medications, everything you can imagine encountering in the nuring field. You must be responsible & conscientious as people's lives are in your hands.( i.e medication errors, etc.) Be prepared to be thick skinned as you deal with alot of difficult things, from angry families, to people in pain, abused children, immoral and unethical doctors that make decisions you cannot begin to understand. The hours are long, with few breaks and it can be very dirty and undignified, not like what you see on T.V. I have been a nurse for 13 yrs and I have seen everything from burned children to decomposed bodies, suicide victims, stillborn babies, you name it. Getting into a program was tough, but nothing compared to after. Just make sure it is what you want before you blow $30 K. Have you worked in nuring before in any aspect ? If not, a nurse's aide job can give you a good idea of what to expect and the training is simple .It can prep you for what you will be in store for.
