What exactly is a hospice registered nurse?

I want to become a registered nurse, but as i look up more stuff on nursing i see that there are different areas of being a registered nurse.

I am a hospice nurse. I've been in hospice for about 6 years, and I love it.

Congratulations to you, for looking at the possibilities of nursing. I've worked in several different specialties, and have found hospice to be my calling.

To be truly honest, most hospices will not hire an RN, until she/he has had some experiance first. The reason for this, is that in hospice, most of our patients are at home. We go to the homes, and handle various crisis/pain situations....

Hospice is a specialty, for the terminally ill, who are unable or have chosen not to continue/seek aggressive treatment (towards a cure). A hospice team usually includes the RN, sometimes an LVN also, as well as a Social Worker and Chaplain, Certified nurse aides to help with bathing. It can be in a pateint home, in a nursing home, or in a hospice inpatient unit. For me, it is an EXTREMELY rewarding specialty.

Even if you do not ultimately choose hospice, there are other rewarding specialties in nursing.... most of us find our "calling", when we've tried a few other things first.

Good luck to you, and God bless.

I think that the hospice RN is someone that went and became an RN, then did a specitily in Hospice. It has to do with the training of the nurse do deal with end stage diseases. How to comfort the patient and family along with doing what ever medicial stuff nurses do.

If you head in that direction, I wish you all the best. I have the upmost respect for nurses.

Hospice works with the dying patient...burn out is common

Care designed to give supportive care to people in the final phase of a terminal illness and focus on comfort and quality of life, rather than cure. In other words all of your patients will end up dying in your care (like in a nursing home, jail with older inmates, etc).

A Hospice RN is usually a nurse who works in Oncology, or the field of Cancer patients or Terminally ill patients. They can be employed in many areas and on many different levels, depending on their area of study and the degree they receive.

When you complete your RN degree, your possibilities are endless. A hospice nurse takes care of patients in their final days and are terminally ill. You can take care of patients in their home, hospital or hospice facility. It all depends on what state you live in.

You can specialize in any area of nursing. After getting experience in that area, you can become certified in your specialty.
