Where did all the jobs for newly qualified nurses go?

having spent 3 years at uni studying hard to become a nurse i find it shocking how there are just no jobs around. what are we supposed to do? it looks like most of us are gonna end up leaving the nhs and looking for different jobs, what a waste.

im from the uk where two thirds of nurses who qualified this sept dont have jobs. there are massive hospital job cuts all over the country

Looks like everyone else on here is American! Hey if you're an adult nurse, and you fancy living abroad, you can get a work visa to live in the states. My friend is a nurse and she is looking into that. They have big shortages, and since their hospitals are all private, plenty enough money to recruit from overseas. So there's an idea.

But assuming you want to stay in the UK, well you're right, it is totally shocking what's going on in the NHS. I don't know what you're hoping to get into but you may want to consider private hospitals?

While you're looking, maybe you could put your skills to use working in the NHS direct call centre? Also, as I understand, permanent vacancies are hard to come by but agencies are being used to fill the voids? I have a friend who is registered with a nursing agency and she gets a lot of work from them.

If you really can't find anything, if you did the diploma course, do you think it could be worth going back to uni and doing a degree top up to give you the competitive edge?

Wow - I live in the Chicago area and there are job fairs for nurses advertised all the time.

Will your school help you with job placement? Call the placement office at your school for ideas/help.

It would be. A friend of mine is doing the same as you, don't know if she's disillusioned yet, but hope not. Don't give up the fight. You are very important, as doctors and nurses. I guess the people in the government just don't see it this way.

Where are you looking? I know there are jobs in the NorthEast (NY/NJ)... actually an abundance of jobs. My mom is always being called in for overtime because there are not enough nurses!

Actually, there are a lot of opening for nurses all over the nation; the demand is high and is staying in a constant for demand.

I would check in your local area, like on Yahoo Jobs or through Monster or Careerbuilder.com......there are many sites in which you can research to look up a job opening, especially for nurses. I am not a nurse and have found a high demand for them in and around the area I live in.

thier still here well in nc our hosptials are in desperate need of more nurses but not enough people can get in the program they only except about 200 a semester

as you can see from the answers above - openings abound just not in your area.
you may need to intensify your search to actually door to dooor looking or look in nearby areas. unless you have money saved up don't look to far. moving expenses and readjustment costs may eat up your first year income fast.
the jobs are out there you need to go and sell yourself. i know that is the one area colleges will not teach you about.
check your states trade journals for listings.
