Dog licking leg -Cause or side effect?

My 11.5 yr old cocker has arthritis in both his back legs. His legs shake sometimes. I saw him nursing part of his leg, about an inch above where the leg meets the foot, or paw. His coat is constantly "hard" from licking at it. I did see a red area, he won't let me get too close and then scurries off with a limp obviously nursing whatever is going on. However, once he is walking around for a while you really wouldnt see him nursing anything unless you studied his walk. But once he is down he does not want to move. I know that sounds like arthritis, but he can not get comfortable sometimes.I watch him lay down, then he'll turn quickly to go lick his leg and sit up and I'll stop him, and then he'll try to lay down again and pop up in 5 mins and he's always breathing a little heavier than normal.

I have heard of allergies, but is he makinga hotspot or allergy worse by licking at it, or is does it sound more serious?I dont thik its just arthriti

Best bet is to have a vet check it out.

My first dog was a beagle. She started licking her leg/paw continously all of a sudden. For a while I just thought it wasn't a big deal. Then when she went in for her check up the vet said she had cancer and had to be put down. I don't know if or why the licking is related but it never hurts to be too cautious. Definately go to your local vet asap, they'll tell you what's wrong.
