What should be considered prior to the use of restraints, physical and chemical in dementia patients?

I am doing research on dementia patients. This question is one that i need to answer.I am currently studying aged care in nursing.

Which is in line with the guidelines in the mental health act.

Prescription drugs to calm them.

OMG. If I took my grandmother to a nursing home and they put her in restraints, I would be kicking somebody's ****.

Compassion? Common Sense?
My dad has Alzheimer's. He just had to stay overnight in the hospital and they drugged him AND restrained him. It was very upsetting for him--he had bruises on his wrists. They did this simply because he wanted to get out of bed and pee. His ordeal is detailed on my blog. It was awful.
