What exactly do doctors do?and nurses.?

i don't know if i want to be a nurse or a doctor. I want to study diseases and the human body and help ppl you know? Do theyhave to deal with really disgusting things? I can handle blood and vomit and thats about it. im talking about the typical doctor you see when you're sick. but nursing is somewhat similar i guess.actually what do nurses do also?

I don't know how old you are but I would suggest volunteering at a hospital. There are a few hospitals that will actually let you sit and feed babies (usually county and state because the are so under staffed.) Just start asking a lot of questions.

There are so many disciplines that you have to figure out what works well with your personality. What I mean is this; I have been a paramedic for 10 years out in the field but this last year I have been working in a hospital (fairly large well known very good one). I work in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit sometimes there are not enough patients for me to be in my unit so I get floated to other units (ER, Trauma ICU, Medical ICU, Cardio Vascular ICU, Oncology, Women's( Labor and Delivery etc). It give me a chance to see the particulars of each specialty and everytime I do float I ask a questions.( do you like it, why did you pick this discipline and so on.) Since I have been exposed to this I narrowed it down to PICU, ER and Transport mostly because of my background in EMS.

As for doctors same thing with the disciplines, but if your personality is not one of being authoritative and taking charge I would say that it is not for you. You have to be very decisive on your decisions able to think quickly, be compassionate enough to explain the futility of treatment to grieving distressed family.

It is very much a personality thing I say this because I have seen nurses and doctors that would do well in other disciplines then what they are in and others that were made for being and ER, Pedi, or ICU. Compassion, understanding and the ablity to explain complicated medical jargan to Jo shmo on the street (who's education could run the spectrum)

Hope that helps!

PS you can also do secretarial work in the units. I know the secretaries where I work have to put in orders and the girl I work with does the same thing that I do by asking a lot of questions. (she is also going to nursing school.)

Doctors diagnose illness by assessing patients. Regardless of the type of doctor you want to be you need to take part in dealing with much more than blood and vomit. Nurses are there to help assess patients as well but we also carry out the plan implemented by the physicians. We are not only there to render care but to the the compassionate, understanding aspect needed when ppl arent feeling well, or when they are scared and need someone to talk to. Often times you need to deal with a little bit more than blood and vomit but you'd be surprised how strong your stomach can get. Nurses administer medication, assess for adverse reactions from that medication, assess patients, ensure that the plan of care implemented by the physician is appropriate and effective. We delegate care to auxillary staff, we collaborate with the healthcare team such as, phsyical therapist, occupational therapist, surgeons, social worker, & family to maximize the care received by the patient. We are also an educator teaching, patients and families who may be newly diagnosed about their illnesses, medications and treatment they receive, and so much more. Being a nurse is sooo rewarding. I LOVE my job.
