What is your opinion on males studying to be nurses?

Is it awkward? Is it normal? Any input would be great!

One of my best friends is studying to be a nurse and it's not weird for him to be doing that. Guys are breaking into the nursing world and I think it's great. Some guys are better fit to be nurses than some of the women in there now. I say this because my mom is a nurse and I know several people who are either nurses or studying to become nurses.
Now it may be awkward in certain situations (like working in labor and delivery), but most of the time male nurses are great.

It's normal. My grandfather was a nurse.

i think it's hot!

Awsome!

i think it's cool. it means he cares for people, isn't in it for making tons of money, and that he has basic medical knowledge (i hope). i say, if you like it, go for it. and if anyone makes it akward, then that's their problem.

I don't see anything wrong with it. There is no such thing that says only females can be nurses. you should totally go for it if its what you want.

I think it would be a very rewarding career, and with the nursing shortage that the hospitals are already experiencing, you will be quite welcome. You also make about $45,000 a year when you specialize in a field. Not only females are nurses.

There are tons of male nurses out there but.....youll be facing some stereotypical hurdles. ....."he doesnt have TLC" or "male nurses shouldnt be working in OB/GYN or Pediatrics" Best of luck

Male nurses are a small percentage but trust me, we need them! Go for it. I have been in the hospital a few times and when a male nurse was needed, he was really needed!

I think it's a great idea. There are quite a few male nurses now so I don't see how you would feel awkward. I think that they bring a new perspective to nursing because they are more assertive, less likely to be pushed around and insulted by doctors, and probably will help get the pay scale raised.

Q: Where does a male nursing student sleep?
A: Anywhere he wants!

There is a huge shortage of nurses, anyone willing to put in the time and effort is tops in my book. You study as much as a doctor so it's an honorable profession and don't let anyone tell you different, good luck with it.

that麓s completely normal and that麓s great, you have to update! and it cannot be always woman like a nurse, the things change...

I don't know why it was ever so strange to begin with. Oh, yeah. Something to do with women being nurturers and caregivers, and men being technical and stuff. Well, now nursing is as technical as being a dr, and being a dr is as nurturing and care-giving as nursing. I think nothing of it, really, but we are just so used to seeing a female nurse, we ARE surprised to see a man take our vitals when we get a physical. Not shocked, or judgemental, just surprised. Like getting on an airliner and having a female pilot and a Straight male flight attendant. Men can be just as good at nursing as women. I'm still a little amused, however, that we are more surprised at a male nurse than a female dr... "Whatever you can do , I can do better..." Oh, and I have a 2nd cousin who's VERY straight, and has been a flight attendant for 30 yrs, and an UNCLE who was a decorated nurse during the Korean and Vietnam wars (something about evacuating 14 injured soldiers by himself from a MASH tent under a heavy artillery attack, with a leg full of shrapnel).

I am in my first semester as a nursing student.
It has not been awkward.
