As a nursing student, why do you think you have to study philosophy? |
i just have to know for research purposes.. thank you! In your professional life you are bound to see all sorts of 'facts of life' like death, cancer, HIV , depression etc. Philosophy will prepare you to face them and protect your mental health. So that you have a better understanding of people's cultures, ideals, thought processes, and perceptions of life which will help you learn to communicate and advocate for your future customers (patients). There are a few reasons why this might be important. Philosophy involves different belief systems and logic used by various thinkers throughout history. As someone who will be dealing with patients and their families, it is important for you to realize that not everyone, or even every good and well-meaning person, will look at the same situation in the same way. Rather than getting frustrated with the lack of compliance you will inevitably face, you may have a better understanding of why people look at things as they do. Secondly, ethics are a major issue within philosophy, and ethical issues often arise in medicine, such as in triage situations, or in situations where you have the opportunity to give an elderly or dying patient pain medication, to which he or she may become addicted, to alleviate discomfort. |
