Why is it important for nursing student to study counselling?

Why is it important for nursing student to study counselling?

If you need to ask this question, then I seriously hope you are not going into nursing!

When you are studying to become a nurse, you need to know how to deal with people. So counselling helps.

To play mind games with patients.

As a nurse, there are several situations you will find yourself in that will depend on what you learn in psychology and counseling classes. Some of these may be how to deal with a patient or patient's family/friends. Other times, you may be dealing with difficulties in your own life based on the patients you help treat. In both situations, you will be glad the university required these classes for you!

Because people going through an illness or who have had an accident are can be in a very fragile state of mind. Counselling skills allow you to deal with people and communicate with them in an appropriate and sympathetic manner.

Hello! The only advice I can offer is personal experience. Last year, my dad was in the hospital with cancer...he was very sick and myself being 15, it was difficult to visit the hospital and see him that way. But the one thing that made it a tolerable time was the nursing staff that would talk to my dad and our family, explain things, help us get through that time. My dad never pulled through, but I will never forget the nurses that not only helped my dad, but my mom and rest of the family.

I agree with what the other responses. You need to know how to properly deal with the patient and his or her family.

In addition to helping you develop communication skills vital to assisting patients and families, it also provides you with training in the identification of people at risk or in crisis. This is particularly important when working with children, the elderly, or the disabled ( all people who are at risk for abuse and neglect). Counseling work will also help you to understand the resources available to you and your patients if there is a mental welfare concern.

because you will be dealing with sick people who need to have someone to talk to when they are in hospital and you will need to be able to spot a patient who isnt doing very well or who is upset and not telling anyone
