Differnces in the study of nursing and medicine?

UK: What are the main differences in the job of a doctor and a nurse? i have heard that nurses can also prescribe drugs so what do differently apart from making beds etc?

What are the main differences between studying nursing and medicine at university?

Please help, i need to know for my daughter who is thinking about a career in a UK university. :)

The study of nursing involves taking many of the same type of studies as would a doctor. A doctor is obviously in more advanced studies and will go to school many more years than a nurse. There are different degrees in nursing: 1.) LPN( licensed practical nurse). They work under Registered nurses (RN's). The only nurses who are allowed to prescribe medications are " nurse practicioners." They go to school almost as many years as a doctor would. The nurse practioners perform many of the same duties as a physician; giving routine check-ups, delivering babies ( normal delivery only), and they can prescribe medications. They can not perform surgeries. LPN's usually do the routine blood pressure, temperature checks, bedpans, etc. The RN's usually serve in supervisory positions over the LPN's and also tend to patients needs. Dona G.

The jobs vary from Country to Country, however in a nut shell , generally a Physician diagnoses disorders and diseases and prescribes the treatments and care that a nurse delivers to a patient.
