Do surgical drains HAVE to be removed? What are the results if left in place?

I had a Csection years ago. I have a knot where the drain was/is. I remember the nurse taking out the staples but I dont remember them ever taking out the drain. I have asked the doctor about it. He said it might be endometriosis(sp), but nothing to worry about. I think that the drain is still in there... whats the odds of that?

It is highly unlikely that the drain is still inside you. If it were, you would certainly have developed an intra-abdominal infection by now (this is like an abscess, but occurs inside the abdominal cavity). The bump in the skin is scar tissue, and if related to a retained foreign body, it would be more likely related to a missed staple (again unlikely) then the drain.

You can read more about this here:

drains have to be removes otherwise they start growing attached to your skin on the inside of your body. if that drain is hanging on you on the outside you need to tell them .
