To my medical/nursing colleagues.....?

Do you know of a surgeon who specialises in repairing extremely large surgical hernias? My husband has been left wih a parastomal hernia (from a colostomy - now has an ileostomy)and the surgeon is not really interested in him any more. Can it be repaired?

These links may be of use to you. It seems to have a UK contact addresses etc.

I would suggest you contact them and ask if they can give you a list of Surgeons who use this technology. With the list you can then trace a Surgeon near you. If they wont give a Surgeons name then maybe they will give you the Hospital that they work at. Worth a shot!

Good luck!!

Medical devices group Tissue Science Laboratories has started a study to compare the use of Permacol for repair of parastomal hernias with current standard treatment with either synthetic mesh or primary suture repair.

he company, which specialises in human tissue replacement and repair products, said 200 patients will be monitored over 12 months.

The aim of the study will be to show that a repair with Permacol, a

proprietary sheet product derived from porcine dermis, has a lower recurrence rate and is associated with less morbidity and pain than other repairs.

Chief executive Martin Hunt said, "Current treatments of parastomal hernias are inadequate, with high recurrence rates requiring additional surgery and further hardship for patients."

"With the emergence of biologic materials, surgeons are investigating whether these new materials might be the answer to alleviate these difficult to treat conditions."

"With over 100,000 implants based on Permacol technology in existence worldwide, we believe our product has the required characteristics to treat this condition and address the issue of recurring hernias," he added.
