I am a third year Nursing student and want to be a surgical tech how do i do it?

Just want to know how much experience i need and if I can chose my post grad placement in a surgical ward or do i have to do a rotation. I want to specialise as a surgical tech then when i am older work with children.

Are you sure you are a 3rd year nursing student? Surgical tech is a completely different program, lasting less than one year on average, and you would get payed significantly less. If you mean a med-surg nurse, you can certainly work in a surgical ward. Most nurses do start out in med-surg, so I don't see a problem with that. If you want to actually be in the OR, you might be able to do that after a few years.

I just wrote an article about surgery technicians that may help you. See the source below. My information is that you need specific certifications in most hospitals even though you will have your nursing degree. The articles shows the requirements that some hospitals posted for hiring people.

good luck!

The first answer is correct. Why would you want to change majors and take less money as a surg tech? Stick it out and become a surgical nurse. Some new grads are able to start off straight into the OR, but you'd be better off working in a medical / surgical unit (post op) first to hone your skills before moving off into a specialty like surgical nursing.
