Surgical/Circulating Nurse?

whats the difference between surgical and circulating nursing??? please, which is better.

The two types of nursing are circulating and scrub. Both are surgical.

The scrub nurse is "scrubbed" with the surgeon, and it part of the sterile operating field. He/she may assist with the surgery, but primarily hands the surgeon what he/she needs, keeps the instruments clean and organized, and anticipates what the surgeon will need next and has it ready.

The circulating nurse is the link between the sterile field and the rest of the OR. He/she gets things for the scrub team and opens them sterilely, and helps with other things outside of the sterile field (patient positioning, paperwork, phone calls, etc.).

Technicians can be used as scrubs, but not as circulators.

Neither is better; both are necessary.

The surgical nurse is the nurse who scrubs in under sterile conditions and assists the surgeon. The circulation nurse doesn't scrub in, does a lot of the paperwork, and takes care of opening and handing off of sterile supplies to the surgical nurse or surgeon. The circulating nurse also takes care of anything the patient needs that isn't in the surgical field.

Both are equally important.
