Is dying a process or simply an event?Doctors/ nurses & some people seem to know when someone is dying.?

I have heard people talk about a person chyming, the throes of death,'travelling' etc. What is the black stuff on the tongue of a person who is dying or has died? Why does the person feel heavier and some people body stretch longer?Someone in a recent near death experience had a green or black tongue and it was not from medicine. In the movies,it seems so simple and dramatic but some people who may have been extremely sick rally up and seem to be getting better; but they die.

Death is a process. The body begins to shut down, starting at the feet and goes up, the body becomes cold.
Breathing is very shallow and death rattles are heard...
Sometimes it can be simple and other times, depending on the condition of the body, it can be very painful....
