Volunteering?? |
I'm looking for ideas for global volunteering. I'm finding that alot of places are charging to travel abroad and volunteer. Some of them a really pricey, while I wouldn't mind paying my airfare I can'y pay for the entire time I'm volunteering. I'm just your average person. I have been in property management most of my life. I was looking at the Peace Corps but it seems like they look for specific trades( Drs,nurses, teachers, carpenters, etc) I'm VERY serious about this and need help from someone with experience with this. My kids are almost grown and I feel like this is something I have to do.I do local volunteer work but I want to take that next step. Please help!! mix it up until you find what you like

I was interested in volunteering also and I found a site online that matches you up by interest with volunteering programs in your area. The site is http://www.volunteermatch.org/ . It is a legit site and VERY helpful. Report It Get involved with the church. They often do fundraisers specifically to fund such trips. There's no reason you couldn't be in the peace corps. But you do definately have to be VERY serious. I've applied for over a year before being accepted. What works in your favor is having done a lot of previous volunteer work or having had volunteer experience. I know that sounds funny, considering that you're giving up 2 years of your life to work almost for free but the Peacecorps these days has the luxury of being picky. There peace corps has 5 main programs. Agriculture, business, Teaching english, HIV aids education and other medical. Public works projects, information technology. If you have a B.A. it shouldn't be hard for you to qualify but if you don't having a lot of volunteer experience can make up for it....at least over a year of experience. Persistance pays off. You might also look into programs like "Habitat for Humanity and such. There's a lot of non-profits and governemntal organizations. Also I don't think there's really any reason to pay to give up years of your life....but if you do make sure it's really paying for things like airfare, lodging and such and not going into someone's pocket.. If it's truly in your heart to try and do service work than don't compromise until you do it. Remember you may not change the world but you can contribute a lot. |
