I made an unintended mistake in a recent question and said "Moslems" instead of Muslims.? |
As I am a 63 year old English guy,who for the biggest part of my life these exotic folk were on travel posters. It is a bit much to expect me to know all the finer points, but I am willing to learn.I got a lot of abuse for my mistake.I worry if I had been there in person would I have had a knife in my back?? Well then as far as I have discovered "Muslim" or "Islam" is the religion, while "Muslim" is the people who practice it.Is that right?? I am very grateful to an Asian surgeon team (the nurse was oriental) who did an utterly superb job on giving me Cataracts to both eyes.I would have been blind now,but I have utterly superb eyesight, and only have to wear glasses for very small print. They are just like my own eyes. Mr Siddiqque was the surgeon at Scunthorpe General,North Lincs.UK PS. The nurse held my hand during the 20 minutes it took Not a mistake, you pronounce different way, look what and how you said is not a important but your intention is important. its ok i forgive you for your spelling mistake! They are both correct. I've seen muslims spelling it moslem. Don't sweat it, people are just jerks on here. Just to put you further in the picture. Asians are quite often not Muslim. For example Japanese are mainly shinto (ancestor worship), Chinese are often christian and most of India is Hindhu. However Indonesia and Malaysia are Muslim. Both "Moslem" and "Muslim" are considered correct. Its not a big mistake. You're correct, islam is the religion itself and a Muslim is someone who practise islam theoretically (faith) and practically (prayers, follow Sharia/Muslim law etc.) Its Ok, your intention was not to abuse. what knife no man dont say that muslim moslim its no difference its all the same meaning . Big deal! While most won't find it offensive, some arabic speaking Muslims will find it offensive because it sounds very similar to the word 'oppressor' in arabic. Don't worry about your spelling mistake. Many people spell the word like that. You are right in that a Muslim is a person who practices the religion. The religion itself is called Islam. I liked reading your post. It implies that you are willing to expand your horizons and open yourself to new ideas, people, and thoughts. That's good. I totally understand what you're saying when you say "for the biggest part of my life these exotic folk were on travel posters". You're my mom's age. And you have more of an open mind than she does! :) Thanks. And there is a common, very common error in pronunciation: It is Islam not Izlam; it is Muslim not Mozlems or Muzlims. Had they known Arabic! Izlam and Muzlem are bad words. there is no mistake in them, both are used. |
