How long after starting solids will a baby be eating solids 3x/day? |
I'm nursing exclusively now, and plan to do so until my little one is 6 months. I'm asking the above question b/c I'll be starting her on solids in early Jan, and will be traveling overseas at the end of that month for 2 weeks. I'll be staying with my sister, so solids in the a.m. and p.m. will not be a problem. But, we'll often be out and about during the mid-day, so it may be problematic to do solids for lunch. Since she'll still be nursing a good deal, can I nurse for lunch exclusively and start the "3 meals/day" when we return to the States? Yes that is perfectly fine. Breastmilk is plenty. The solids are more for practice at this point, breastmilk is the main diet until 1 year old. I started my son on solids here and there at 4 months, maybe around 6 months 1-2 times a day, at about 9 months he started 2-3 times a day and nurses as desired. My son's Ped told us it doesn't really matter how you do it, you just need to get to 3 meals a day by 1 year old, like a normal person. Each baby is different and will like different amounts but twice a day should be plenty! my son only eats solids twice a day and hes 6 1/2 months and he doesnt even eat the whole container but hes not a big solids eat though. if your baby shows signes of wanting it during lunch then i would offer it- ask your ped and they can advise you more on that at 3 months they can start having rice cereal for breakfast w/ breast milk. by 6 months they can have pureed food for lunch and dinner and be supplemented w/ breast milk.at 1 year they can pretty much eat what you do in small portions. breast feed at night and with meals, just not as much as you use to. it all depends on your baby, but you can bet that it will take more than one month before she will be ready for a second or a third solid meal in a day. However the best time of the day for solids is lunch, since baby is not super hungry, like first thing in the morning and if something upsets the little one's stomach you will know well before sleep time. But you can offer the meals on the go. In the beginning she will be eating baby cereal and you can pack a little container with the dry cereal and add water when she is ready for lunch, very simple. The 2nd and 3rd meal will be add by you when you feel baby is ready, -one at a time. If she is eating all her lunch and not missing the nursing, maybe about a month and a half later, but is really up to you and her. Remember that breast milk is great and if you have to nurse a whole day for whatever reason after you start the solids as far as nutrition it is ok. |
