Emergency circumcision for med reason, left open, ointment only, and told to use cloth nappy. Is this common?

Well, actually I didn't want to have the circumcision at first, that's why he had it after he's 3 months old instead of newborn.
My son had blockage, his foreskin stuck together causing him to scream in pain when urinating and he had blood in his urine.

Doctor said that reopening the foreskin only would have the risk of it sticking back together, so he suggested circ.

So if you bash me for child abuse, it means YOU prefer my poor baby to be in PAIN forever... now THAT's child abuse.

In all the circumsision I've known, the baby was either wrapped in petroleum gauze, or plastibell.
Anyone had similar experience?
How do you care for circumcision area which is not wrapped in anything?
Was told not to put anything except garamycin cream (not the EYE ointment).
Wouldn't cloth nappy stick to the wound, if you don't put petroleum jelly on it?
But then again I heard that vaseline is a good media for bacterial growth.

Great, after being called "Child Abuser", now somebody accused me for intentionally hurting my child by "pulling the foreskin", which I obviously didn't. And neither did the doc or anyone else, for that matter.

Why can't I get answers without being improperly judged?

I'm sorry, but you picked a best answer the last time you asked the exact same question (except in that question you were using disposable diapers), and said it was very helpful. If it wasn't sufficient, then why don't you call the doc? It annoys me a little that you would get all those valuable answers, that people put time into giving you, and you discard them by reasking the exact same question. I won't repeat myself, see my answer on the other version of this question. Obviously you don't trust the repeat answers from everyone on y!a, or your doc, so maybe you should find a doc you can trust. I do wish your child the best of luck recovering from the circ though, and I hope end up hearing whatever you're listening for on this forum.

You have to be very vigilant on the car e until he is healed. regular diaper changes even when not soiled or wet because you will need to apply ointment and ensure he is not 'sticking' to the pamper. If it were me, I would leave the pamper off as often as possable this will allow the owund to heal much faster and keep out any urine or feces. Might be a bit of a mess but well worth it in shortened healing time and pain the poor babe will feel when the diaper is keeping the urine and feces on the wound.

i was told to use triple antibiotic ointment on my son's circ

i hope not

Were you pulling back his foreskin before? You shouldn't have.

I'm so sorry you guys got a foreskin ignorant doctor. There are so many things wrong with this scenario.

Read the other pamphlets too, to avoid any more injury.

I would leave him diaperless.

Actually while I am not against circumcision for valid medical reasons, too often in the USA it's a "surgery first, ask questions later" scenario when it comes to circumcision. I don't know what you mean by "foreskin stuck together" but I do know that his symptoms probably were not all caused by foreskin and could most likely have been treated (and treated better) another way. Blood in the urine, for example, unless the blood was actually coming from a tear in the foreskin or something, is probably due to a bigger problem in the kidney or bladder.

Anyway most people do indeed use gauze, usually with some sort of ointment like vaseline and some people use antibiotic cream. If you're not happy with what your doctor told you then ring up and ask for more info or seek a second opinion. I'm sure if you have a google you will have plenty of options for circumcision care. Personally I wouldn't put any type of nappy on, cloth or disposable, without first covering the wound with something. Not only might it stick, but it's at huge risk of being exposed to faeces and becoming infected.

if it worries you, try getting a second opinion from a doctor. im sorry your child had to go through that and you obviously did the right thing just ignore the people saying you are bad for having it done, what do they expect you to do? just let your child go through the pain forever? sorry i cant be of more help but i just wanted to say something because people have no right to judge you for your decision

I would seriously go back to the doctor who performed the operation, or better still a different doctor, because I don't think a newly-circumsized penis should be left open. Act upon this asap.

yeah my son had a circ at 1 month cus i wasnt sure if i wanted it done, but they told me for the first 2 days to put ointment on it and after that nothing because it has to dry out in order to heal, also the penis is always in a diaper anyway so it has added moisture. The doctor also told me to leave his diaper off between changes for a minute to let it dry up. hope this helps dont worry it will get better soon! good luck!

:( I'm sorry your son had to go through that pain. :( And pain for you too, seeing him in pain... Anywho, when my son was circumsized the doctor put petroleum jelly on the cut and then gauze around it... and we were told to continue putting petroleum jelly on it for two days to keep it from sticking to the diaper (and we took the gauze off after two days as well). And all was fine. Our friends who had a baby around the same time as us also had their little guy circ'd by a different doctor and they were told the same thing... I guess all docs have different ways of treating things, but as a mother, my intuition says put something on there so it doesn't stick and hurt him more. And as always keep it clean and the diaper clean as well. Good luck to you and your baby.
