What did you use to wash and sooth your excoriated radiation burns?

I am taking care of this little old 89 yr old man who has burns to his face from radiation treatments. His face is peeling off, red and bleeding and looks terrible. They stopped the treatments for a week and plan to resume. I thought about washing his face with wound cleanser. I am a cancer RN, but since I have never experienced this myself, I am not sure what helps the most.
Any ideas?

yup i have had a patient with in this situation.

cover the burnt area in paraffin wax after cleaning and reapply every 4-6 hours. paraffin creates a seal stopping water leaving the body and reduces pain as it protects sensitised nerves. the paraffin imitates the natural oils secreted by the skin. skin cells are better able to multiply and regenerate with this treatment. pain is also helped. make sure you buy plenty of this paraffin - as the burn heals switch to aqueous cream bp.(aqueous cream has a bunch of paraffin in it plus some moisturisers - look out for stuff that also contains sorbolene or glycerine as these help also). following this regime definitely will help heal faster.

same thing happend to my brother in law except it was all over his forehead..
my sis cleaned him up with Aquaphor healing ointment from Eucerin.
about 2 or 3 times a day, take off the old cream with a gauze to clean it up, then would reapply it again.
at night time she would put gauze (one that doesn't stick to the skin) and once in a while when going out, put a head bandage to cover it up.. also, have him stay away from the sun.

my brother in laws burns look soo much better now..
his radiation will be complete on 7/9/07
good luck.
