A question for Gone With the Wind readers or watchers.?

I was rereading Gone With the Wind today, and I finished it and as per usual I was horribly disappointed. Yes Scarlett is mean, selfish, racist etc - but I still wanted things to work out well for her.

What do people think then, does Scarlett get Rhett back? Is it truly possible for his love to have "run out"? Not thinking in real life terms, but in romantic novel terms - could it happen?

This is one book which I truly adore, until the ending. I'm devastated at the thought that Scarlett might not get Rhett back! That probably makes me horribly shallow and awful, but I don't care, it's true!

Regardless of the sequel, I think she gets him back after a while. It's obvious that she and Rhett are in love for years before they actually get married. Rhett is just really stubborn and Scarlett will have to beg and plead to get him back but I think she will. I agree... the book is amazing until the end, which I hate because they don't end up together.

Rhett tried and tried. She didn't realize what she had with him till it was too late. This is my all time favorite book/movie and I wish it would have ended different also

You must read: the authorized sequel:

Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley......it is wonderful....it tells what happens later...Scarlett moves to Ireland...please try and find it. Your local library should have it. There is also a book coming out in November called..."Rhett Butler's People" it is by Donald McCraig.....can't wait to read this book.

Happy Reading!

Well, if you want what Margaret Mitchell's version of what happens, I don't know that you will ever know. However, someone did write a sequel called Scarlett. It's by Alexandra Ripley. They made a mini-series out of it too starring Joanne Whalley (Kilmer) and Timothy Dalton. To me, the Gone With the Wind story just isn't complete without this sequel. If you haven't read it, check it out. Just be sure to keep in mind it's by a different author, so the style and everything is different.

I always wanted to answer this question! what's shallow about that? Scarlett is a true survivor and i don't think she's racist; she is good to all people who she thinks are worthy and snaps at ppl who she thinks are no good. the magic of the book is that it ends at such a critical point of her life that she understands all her illusions are gone and the fog at last is lifted.
maybe the meaning is that at last she has the whole picture right even at a high price. it doesn't look good with Rhett, you are right, there. but given her attitude , it's not that impossible that finally he will be back one day. Scarlett has always been 'under his skin' and he suffered a lot from her childish attitude.
then again she may find someone else to love. plus she always loves Tara most than anything and she's had a pretty distorted view of love due to her predjudices.
rhett has abandoned her again at a critical moment of her life and then came back. these two... are almost the same. how can he abandon her forever? nobody is like Scarlett. after some time, i cannot believe that he wouldn't want to see her again.
no, he still loves her but wants to hurt her when she's most vulnerable when she realized Ashley's love was bull and she really needs him.
but they have an ugly cat and mouse game going on... they both need to grow up. they both need time on their own. then they will know if it's true love or not.
maybe that's why the book ends there.
thanks for the lovely question!

i think it seriously is possible for love to run out, especially for rhett, since he is a "scoundrel" and does as he pleases, regardless of other's feelings and opinions. if he loved scarlett for so long, and she never returned the love, he would get tired of unrequited love, and stop loving automatically, if not willingly. but i also feel sry for scarlett, suddenly loving a man that had loved her so much, but loving him too late for her love to be returned.

Scarlett left Rett because she was pragmatic, she picked Rett in the end, only after he left war and came back to her.

OK from a watchers point of view,,maybe Scarlett did not want to kiss him or want him back(Clark Gable had terrible halitosis and wooden teeth)
