What is a staph infection? concerned...?

I took care of my nephew the other day and the mom said he had a bad diaper rash. I changed his diaper and put ointment on it and I cleaned my hands with baby wipes. She took him to the Doctor the next day and it turns out it was a staph infection because he had an open wound.

I am concerned because I have 1 year old twins. Is it contagious? What should I look for, like what are the signs that you have one. I really have no idea what a staph infection is. Any help is much appreciated.
