Do you think it is haram?

do you think it is harm to say ugly? not to a certain person just in general.

this past sunday i was w/ my friends at the masjid and we were decorating this room for a party for the kids from Quran school. and people kept on coming in asking if it was someone's wedding and we of course said no, then we started joking about what if it was someone's wedding. becuase the decorations were really bad. anyway we wound up talking about how when people get married they usually don't care as uch about their appearance and they start to look different. so we kept on talking and we were talking about how when you get married and the guy is used to you wearing makaeup and sees you w/ out it then he is going to say you are ugly. so after i said that this lady started screaming astfirllallah(sp???) and told me to say it, becuase i called someone ugly. but i said no. and she got really upset, becuase i told her that we weren't talking about people we were just joking.

so was i wrong? is it bad?

Simplicity, we weren't talking loudly, but she was sitting at the table right next to were i was standing on a chair hanging streamers and my friend was right next to me. but we were just laughing and joking. but not loud, because we were right next to each other and we were excited for the end of summer quran school, because we both had volunteered all summer

you say that every woman without make is ugly &get surprised from ur friend reaction. may be she took it personally. but i myself think that ur idea is totally wrong. a good mind , nice actions&a sweet tounge make a woman the most butiful creature on earth. you might be surprised to know that i,m a man among many men that dislike the whole idea of makeup . i alays like to see my woman without any as i want to see her reality not those clown masks women used to hind behind.i also would never think of kissing lipstick but prefer real lips . a woman without makeup is a confident one in my eyes& allah never create ugly creatures. got the idea dear sister.

No. That woman was simply stupid. (Sometimes you simply have to go along with what stupid people tell you in order to keep peace).

"Haram" are only the things that God and His Prophet have prohibited.

Sounds more like she took it the wrong way.... just a simple misunderstanding and possibly a generation gap.

If she can't tell the context in which you said it - humorously - then she has a problem.

it's true it's one of the sin is ul-ghaybah , which talk about someone behind his/her back. but here you didn't really talking about someone especially , you were talking in general. but even that, you still have to say AstaghforAllah (God forgive) either you though it's haram or no, nothing wrong from saying Astaghfor Allah just to be in the right track.

however, in this verse, it talks about making fun at groups, which God has forbid as well.

[11] O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames..............

You were in the masjid. Exactly how loud were you and your friends? You couldv'e waited for her to calm down and then explain to her what it really was you were talking about. Sad to say but this, your topic is true. Because you weren't speaking of no person in particular, it shouldn't count as slandering or backbitting. And of course, Allaah knows best. Just remember to lower your voices in the masjid and try to speak of beautiful things instead.

yes it is, calling anyone ugly is a sin, because you are mocking and making fun of the creation of Allah subhanawatallah, i'd recomend you repent

It seems like a small misunderstanding B/W you and that lady. She simply thought you were bad mouthing someone or you were talking behind someone's back. We read in qoran that when people of hell arrive to hell, the guardians of hell will ask them how did you end up here? and they will answer we did not pray, we did not help others and we were among those who used to talk vain talks. In other part of qoran we read that talking behind someone else is like eating your dead brother's flesh. having sited these things from Qoran, I should say that you have done nothing wrong and your case was NOT talking behind someone or vanity talk.
