Question about Animal Control and cats?

Ok, tough and confusing situation:

A few days ago a stray/feral cat that I've been feeding for the past week suddenly bit me after I tried to separate it from fighting with my brother's cat.

My wounds were treated at urgent care, I was given a tetanus shot and antibiotics. The wound has gone down in swelling and feels better. But they requested at the urgent care that I fill out a form detailing the event to Animal Control.

This morning, Maricopa County Animal Control came out and inquired about the cat. It sounded like I had two options: claim "owner/victim" status of the animal, or have it quarantined to be checked for rabies infection.

I chose quarantine because I don't know the medical history of the cat and rabies scares the hell out of me.

Question:

Am I able to reclaim the cat after the quaratine period is up, and assuming the original owner (if it has one) doesn't pick it up, and it doesn't show external signs of rabies?

If not, can it be adopted by someone else?

The officer said he considered the animal domesticated.

Cats rarely get rabies, so I wouldn't worry much about that. But still, cat bites and scratches can get nasty infections, so it is a good thing you went to the clinic. You can probably adopt the cat if no one else claims it, but it *may* never be a good pet. Or it could end up your best friend. If you do decide to keep it, get it fixed as soon as the vet will allow.

yes if it's not immediately put 2 sleep

Yes you can. If it does not have rabies it will not be put to sleep and you can reclaim/adopt after 14days if no one else claims it.

I believe you can adopt the pet. Animal Control would much rather give it to a loving home than to put it to sleep.

If you want the animal then you should make sure to get in touch with Animal Control with your request.

Do you really want to reclaim a cat that is agressive? You, and for that matter my mom, are nuts. It will be assessed and put up for adoption. My experience is to just say good by to it and take care of that hand. I just did a third surgery on a patients hand that was bitten by a stray cat, and she is probably going to lose her thumb in the next couple of days if a miracle does not occur.

you might be able to adopt the cat it is within the proper channels and if the cat is going to be adoptable.(tamed) but from the sounds of it. it is a wild cat that can not be tamed and will probably be put down humanely good luck

Hi, I take in stray cats and try to re home them, this isn't really an answer to your question I just wanted to tell you you did the right thing to get treatment so quickly. One of my cats came to me very dirty with matted fur, I only touched it and it gave me a tiny scratch. When I woke up next morning I could just about walk, it took me two weeks to get back on my feet again. So good on ya for such quick thinking.

Now to your question, you might have to pay boarding fees for puss if you want him back. He might be too stray by now to tame, I have 4 that live in my garden - but I wouldn't dare try and touch them. But if you've fallen in love with this cat and want it back get in touch with whoever took it away A.S.A.P and ask them. But be prepared for more fights and scratches.

I think U can, after the time is up, U can claim it, or U can request it to go to an adopation family....

i dont know wht the laws are where you live but im sure you could call and ask and see wht you can do if you want it im sure the cat is ok and would love to have a good home if you are willing to give it one i love cats good luck
