Dog bit by another dog?

My dog was bit by another dog. He seems healed except one spot there's a bump under the skin where a bite was. The vet warned me that could happen and that if it did, surgery would be required to get the infection out. He doesn't wince when I touch the spot and seems to be fine. If the vet hadn't mentioned surgery I wouldn't be freaked about it...Has anyone else had this problem and will it go away on its own or will he HAVE to have it surgically taken care of? I can't even find where the puncture wound was because everything else healded so well. His disposition is great but I don't want it to kill him if I don't get it taken care of...thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, it was 2 weeks ago and the other 5 punctures healed fine. I have sure changed my mind about how wonderful dog parks are...ugh

Thanks everyone, I will watch the bump and see if it grows!

What this spot is called is a Hematoma!! Usually puncture wounds will cause a hematoma. Sometimes its a buildup of blood and then other times its blood and infection. It usually takes place in dogs ears but my dog was beaten pretty bad by another dog and two he got two hemotomas with these. The vet just cut a small incision and put drain tubes in it. They drained out for about a week, which was kinda nasty but after that he was good to go. The vet then called it surgery because they did have to sedate to do the procedure. I think it cost me about $200. So don't worry he should be fine, just get with the vet to make an appointment to have it fixed.

It could just be scaring. The only way to tell is by taking him back to the vets and see what they have to say. If it's not infected and not ozzing then it's probably just the way the wound healed.

if his overall health is fine then dont worry, you can always have blood drawn and that would tell if an infection was present, but dont worry. Give him dailey vitamins to help his body in case there is a small infection. PLeanty of good food and water with added rest will help if there is one

If it's an infection, yes, it will need surgery. Without it, the infection (also known as an abcess) will burst, but then come back. It will keep bursting (with pus and blood everywhere) and coming back until it's cleaned and drained properly.
Gross for you, and uncomfortable for the pup.

You will know if it's an abcess if it grows. The pus and infection will spread pretty rabidly, in a few days it will be huge.
It could be a knot of scar tissue.

Good luck

EDIT
The infection won't necessarily show on the surface. Often, the original punctures (or cuts) heal completely with not even a scar, but the infection is under the skin.

My mom's dog (a West highland Terrier) was bitten by another dog (Australian Shepard/Pitbull) and had a similar issue. At first it looked like he just had some defensive teeth skin scrapes on his paws, but then we noticed a dime sized spot on his neck was missing hair. We took him to the vet and they told us it looked fine, but we should watch it as it could swell and burst. The vet then told us that if it burst we should watch for signs of infection (pus). The area did continue to swell a little more and more hair fell out to leave about a half-dollar sized mark. After a little over a week it opened and it was just blood. No infection. For your dog, I'm not sure how long it has been since the incident or how intesive the other wounds were, so just take my experience in consideration to your own specific situation.

Listen to your vet. Infections can be serious.

Get a second opinion, hon.

If the bump is an infection you have to have it taken care of.. If the bump is just scar tissue, you can just leave it.. He will have a war scar but it's not anything that would need surgery.. It would basically be cosmetic surgery if you were doing it just for scar tissue and the looks.. If it is infection tho, or has absessed you need to have it taken care of.. The infection can get into the blood stream and then he is really in trouble.

If you have a good vet, they can just lance the spot so the area can drain. Usually there is not a need for major surgery. This can be done in the vet's office and then the dog can probably go home with you the same day, usually on antibiotics.
