Urgent Parakeet (Budgie) injured. Cock attacked then hen. Can I apply antibiotic to the wound?

Hi

Is it safe to apply antibiotic (neosporin) to the wound?

I have two budgies the hen recently laid eggs, four eggs, 3 of them hatched, the fourth might hatch today or later. In the meanwhile, the cock (male) and the hen (female) fought for some reason I dont know why?. The hen got hurt due to that. Can I apply antibiotic ointment to it? Is it safe to apply antibiotic, Is neosporin safe to apply? Other than that the bird (hen) looks fine? I am not a breeder I have only two birds and they ended up laying eggs. I just want to take care of them as much as possible.

Please advice.

Thanks a lot.

Sure.. why not.. I apply neospoin to my pets... It is one of the greatest antibiotic creams there is and if the animal/bird/etc being applied to cannot lick it off.. it will do a lot of good

I apply neosporin to our birds all the time.

when babies hatch i have heard of fighting between momma and daddy. Watch them, you might need to take the babies and hand raise them. I would take her to an avian vet, she has babies to take care of and that is a huge stress on her body.

That;s extremely abnormal behavior for a male budgie. Usually, they take good care of their mates whiel they have young chicks. The male will even regurgitate his food for the female so that she does not have to leave the hatchlings.

I don't think that just a TEENSY bit of Neosporin is going to hurt the bird; but you should probably call the vet to ask what should be done about the male. While you're at it, you can ask about the Neosporin. Also, be very careful to watch fo infection! Small birds have some really crappy immune systems.

There is a product out called quick stop. It can be used to stop bleeding and antibiotic all in one..

It鈥檚 safe, be sure it鈥檚 a cream though 鈥?water soluble. Birds tend to pick and scratch, if it鈥檚 not a cream (not water soluble), they could spread it and not be able to get it off their feathers.

Also if the wound is on a feathered area, don鈥檛 be afraid to wet down the feathers and try to see the wound. Apply the Neosporin directly over the wound.

Betadine solution is also a great topical antiseptic for birds. Soaking the area in Betadine and then applying an ointment is a good combination.

If it bleeds while cleaning, be sure to have some corn starch or flour handy as well. If dabbing it with a swab doesn鈥檛 stop the bleeding, applying a little of this to the wound could help clot the blood.

yes u can

About a year ago one of my birds cut her leg on something in my avairy so i took her to my local vet. They suggested putting acriflavine on the wound at least once a day unitl it is full healed. This is like betadine only it can not harm the bird in any way. It definatly worked for my bird. She did end up loosing her leg but she gets around ok now and even though the wound was massive the acriflavine stopped it from getting any infection which may have killed her. Try it and it should fix it all up.
