Keeping kitty's wound infection-free?

She got into a small fight with the other cat in the house this morning and got a cut on her ear which did bleed. Because there is little hair on her ears (even though she's long haired), her wound is constantly exposed.

I was wondering if you guys could suggest the most efficient care technique that you know of in order to keep her ear free from dirt, and when she is exposed to it, ways to clean it until it is healed.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Render first aid to your kitty's ear identical to that you would render to yourself if you had a scratch.

Get some cotton balls, a clean cloth, some soap and water; some hand sanitizer or hydrogen peroxide; and a tube of triple antibiotic ointment; bacitracin or neosporin.

If you have to wrap kitty in a towel so she won't fight you, do so, but this won't hurt much or at all. Using the clean cloth, moisten the wound, then use soap to clean it of any dried blood and expose the scratch, without any debris clinging to it. Then use another corner of the cloth to rinse the soap off really well. Blot the wound dry. Then apply a dollop of hand sanitizer (which is just alcohol in gel form), or a cotton ball saturated in hydrogen peroxide to the wound. These are antiseptics, so give them a moment to work. The hand sanitizer will sting a little, and then the discomfort will subside; the peroxide may foam up a little, and then the foaming will subside. When the stinging or foaming has settled down, blot the wound dry with a clean cotton ball. Then apply the antibiotic cream. Put some on your finger, and rub it into the scratch really well -- because your cat is going to remove it as soon as you let her go. But if you have fully exposed the scratch and cleaned away the debris, killed loose critters with antiseptic, and really gotten some antibiotic down into the scratch, some of the antibiotic will be absorbed into the wound, and that is what counts. Don't slather the antibiotic on; just use a little and really rub it down into the scratch, being gentle, but getting it in there.

Have a look at the scratch in the morning. If it is well closed over and tight looking, just put on some more antibiotic cream. If it looks like an open scratch, if the margins are raw-looking and clearly distinguishable, wash it again, apply antiseptic, and do the antibiotic. Ditto in the evening.

If it is as I somehow feel it is, just a small scratch, you probably won't have to wash it again. And reapplying antibiotic cream should hold back infection, or keep it to very minimal.

All you need is some neosporin with pain relief.
Get the ointment it stays on better.
Cat can lick it won't hurt her.
Two times a day.
