My dog has a very bad infected cut wound and its not working even though she is in a very strong antibiotics?

she got a a cut from a rusted iron on her right front leg, but i kept her at home for 2 days due to fullybooked at vetenary, and she got infected, she had gone through 3 surgerys plus on the strong antibiotics but still she has 3/4 wound infected and its been nearly 3 weeks gone and still admitted in vetenery care, but i'm worried when she will be healed or when that ifection will be gone. Infected area is black, but she is active and eating well.also she always open her stitch with her back leg by scratching it.i'm very worried about her situation.

if she is nibbling at the stictched area, you'll need to make sure she's wearing an e-collar to make access to the area harder.

keep the area clean and dry per Veterinary instructions and continue the antibiotic for the full amount of time the doctor prescribed... don't stop sooner.

call the vet and ask if there is any topical relief you can administer that won't counter act to the anti-biotic she is on.

the lesson here is, if your vet is fully booked, find an emergency vet or another veterinarian that can fit your dog in rather than waiting 2 days to see a vet for just this reason.

its the same for people. if you step on a rusty nail, you would need to go to the doctor asap due to infection, and for humans, the risk of tetnis.

as long as she's not showing signs of lethargy, loss of appetite and is drinking normally, follow vet's instructions and make an appointment to be seen asap if you are worried.

and don't forget to make a followup appointment within the next week so the vet can take a look at how things are going, and change medications accordingly. Keep the vet in the know.

She may have an infection that is resistant to the current antibiotics. You will need a culture to figure this out. If it was my case, I would get an aerobic, an anaerobic, and a mycoplasma culture. Also, there may be a piece of something stuck in there. The area needs to be radiographed plus or minus a fistulogram (contrast inject in wound to see how far it extends).

The black spot could be gangerine,or dead tissue, I wouldn't waste any time. Please take your dog to a different vet, this is quite serious. She may have to go back to surgery to remove that injured part of her leg. Also, make sure she is up to date on her shots and blood tests, this will tell the vet a lot of information.

Deep wounds can take time to heal especially if there was tissue destruction. Take your dog back to the vet for checkups so that he can see the progress or lack thereof. If there has been progress then it is working. Ask about increasing the dressing changes and ask them to teach you how to do it yourself. I do dressing changes on humans and it does take time. Purchase an E-collar to put around your dogs neck. It prevents them from licking the wound. They cost $20 at petco or petsmart. If the stich comes undone it wouldn't benifit to have it redone as it will just heal from the inside out. unless there is uncontrollable bleeding but that doesn't sound likely.

Have you or your vet look into honey for healing a wound?

One of our rescue dogs was put on all kinds of different antibiotics. None worked for her. Finally, the vet packed the wound with honey and the wound healed.
There is a lot on the net about this. It works where antibiotics don't. Take a trip out to the net and look it up.
