Guinea Pig bite wound? |
My brother was taking care of my pet guinea pigs over the weekend. They get along very well. they are both sows. I was weighing and grooming my young one, and I found a scab and some open flesh on her ear and the skin below her ear. What should i do before I take her to the vet? I have cleaned the wound with some diluted hydrogen peroxide, and I am keeping the guinea pigs together, but I have put in two hidey houses so they don't get too close. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO. I am scared, your doing just fine. Keep the wound clean and washed, it will heal quickly. Wounds will happen with the best behaved guinea pigs, they sometimes just get crabby with sharing things especially if its over treats and food. Anytime you have 2 animals together you run the risk of possible bites and scratches. Just watch to make sure it doesnt get infected and keep it clean as long as they are not constantly fighting, you can keep them together and just increase the check ups on both to be sure your not missing any more wounds. I've raised and bred Guinea Pigs for 17+ years go to vet Don't use peroxide on it anymore. Keep an eye on it.Use warm soapy water to clean it if needed. If it starts looking worse, call your vet and ask if neosporin is safe to use. Good luck Firstly don't worry, cuts to guinea pig ears are quite common, and usually heal pretty well. As long as your guineas are showing no major aggression towards each other it is probably best to keep them together, as this will save you from having to re introduce them. Remove any shavings(put newspaper down instead) or hay from your guineas hutch to prevent the wound from getting infected, and keep your guinea pigs away from flies in a hutch/indoors. Clean the wound regularly as well to prevent infection. Good Luck! switch over to antibacterial dish soap from the peroxide. peroxide will eat the bacteria as well as healthy tissue around it. |
