Care for my sterilized pup?

My female (9 m/o) JRT female was sterilized today...I'm due to pick her up in two hours. She is my first female dog, so I don't have any experience with this...is there anything important that I need to know about caring for her and cleaning the wound? I've been told that she will only have internal stitches (which disolve on their own) and some sort of sealant over the outside...Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks so much for all the great advice. She was very groggy when I went to pick her up and was feeling very sorry for herself! She's slept ever since, so she's been no problem! May be a bit difficult tomorrow, once the anaesthetic has worn off! Her doctor also gave me a very detailed care sheet and let me know what symptoms to look out for, in which eventuallity I would have to take her back to see him. I'm taking tomorrow off work, so that I can keep an eye on her and give her lots of cuddles!

If your vet is any good, they will tell you everything you need to know for proper care.

Basically, there's nothing to it except to make sure she stays calm for a number of days. No playing, running, jumping, etc. Your vet will tell you exactly how long and give you more thorough information about what is allowed and what is not. You'll also need to keep an eye on her, at least initially, to make sure she is not fidgeting with the incision area. Most dogs will either mess with it or ignore it, so you should know pretty quickly. If she licks it or otherwise bothers it, she will need a cone.

It's nothing to really worry about. You'll both get through it just fine as long as you follow the vet's instructions.

CRATE HER! I didnt because I am a wussy and felt bad for my girl and bla bla bla I ended up spending an extra $300 at the vet because I let her move around too much and she developed fluid in the muscle tissue. She also chewed a few of her stitches out and had an allergic reaction to them, I would ask the vet if you can give the dog any kind of allergy medicine like benadryl in case there is a reaction or if there is a topical cream you can get, even if you arent going to have stiches I would still think it was a good idea. The reaction cause her to have large blisterlike bumps along the incision, and they were painful and had to be lanced. Do what you can to keep her warm for the hours after surgury because anesthesia lowers their body temperature. Just make sure you dont let her jump, run, play or really even walk, oooh that's going to be hard with a JRT! Good luck and congratulations for spaying your girl!

the vet should send you home with a home care sheet.
if they dont, general care is leash exercise for the first few days. keep her warm and quiet tonight, no food till tomorrow am. just water tonight(this is because of the anesthetic).. keep the wound clean with warm salty water. dont let the dog chew at the wound. and so on.
