What is the best way to clean and care for a wound on the paw of a house cat? |
he had a growth removed from has paw a few months ago and it had healed. just recently he sort if the site is not infected your cat will keep it perfectly clean and healthy by licking it. now this may seem to be NOT the thing to do(and in a humans case it CERTAINLY isn't)but in your pets case it IS the best that can be done.most animals have enzymes in their saliva that promote healing.and up to a point some antibacterial action also so if the site doesn't look infected let your pet do what comes naturally.if it does look infected then contact your vet for some antibiotics. Neosporin works well. After you apply a little rub it in as best you can. Most cats tend to like the taste of it so don't put too much on at a time. clean with peroxide, apply neosporin (antibiotic ointment) You may not agree but just leaving it may be best. Cats are wild animals and I dont think they sell perxoide in the wild, so you cat may have natural insicints of what to do. What I did with my cat was..... you can delute peroxide and put that on and neosporin. you might want to call your vet to let them know that this is going on. generally I'd leave it, the cat knows how to look after it, but if you do want to clean it up a bit, then I'd use boiled water, left to cool, with some salt dissolved in it, and just wash the area a couple of times a day, if the cat will let you. my cat pulled a claw out and all I did was bathe it and let him do the rest. He's fine now, though missing a claw! neosporin and if possible get an elizabethan collar from the vet so he cant lick at it until it sinks in ...i would leave the collar on for at least a half and hour to let the medication get in... |
