How to care for a serious wound on head of horse...?

Our horse wandered out into a wildlife reservation for a few months before finally wandering back home. She was still growing and the halter she was wearing had gotten so small for her that her skin grew around the top of it and a little bit on her nose. After removing the halter it left a large, open wound that we have thoroughly cleaned out and are applying topical treatment for three times a day...we are using an iodine solution. Any suggestions for any other products to apply or techniques to use to care for the poor baby? A vet is not a viable options for us.

First of all, let me say that if you are not a farm or ranch owner do not bother answering this question. I have gotten such criticism from people because I said a vet was not an option for us. Let me explain that we have spoken to our vet in town and he agrees with the course of action we are taking. We live on a ranch, we raise cattle and horses, and we do all the treatment of our animals ourselves. Our filly wandered into the wildlife preserve(25,000+ acres) with a halter on that she outgrew while lost and when she came back home finally her halter had gotten so small for her that her skin was growing around it on the top of her head and her nose. We cut off the halter and removed it but she now has some nasty wounds where it had imbedded into her skin. We are giving her combiotic shots and treating the wounds with an iodine solution three times a day. Does anyone have suggestions on products or treatments that might help her heal faster and with less scarring?

your horse will need a vet the injury from the halter may not heal properly and she could be left with a nasty wound which does not heal.
why is a vet not a viable option,is it because of costs?if it is then you should give her away to some one who will fork out for vets bills,if you had a nasty gash on your self would you get treatment for it or leave it and say its not viable?

At the risk of sounding mean, I would suggest you give that horse away to someone who can afford to take proper care of it. They are a huge responsibility and I am wondering how in the world you can let your horse "wander away" for several months and not check on her, knowing she had a halter on that she would probably outgrow. You are treating it the same way I would, but ...............Find her a new home, please.

Get a vet to come as soon as possible.

For now, i'd put some SWAT on and some bag balm or vaseline. It creates a shield.

It really helps, my horse got a really deep cut on his, nose and i put some bag balm on, which created a barrier so no bacteria could get in, while it was healing underneath.

Hope it helps!
