What is a primary dressing and secondary dressing in wound care?

What is a primary dressing and secondary dressing in wound care?

Primary - the gauze or pad that is actually on top of the wound.
Secondary - the wrap or tape that holds it in place.

OKay, the primary dressing is applied directly to a wound and the secondary dressing covers the primary dressing.

Example: xeroform directly to the wound bed covered by gauze.

Secondary dressings are generally used when the primary dressing needs to be kept moist (like xeroform, vaseline gauze, aquacel, etc) or when there is a lot of exudate.

A primary dressing is one that is place directly on the wound to perform a function, like an antibiotic coated telfa pad, or a dressing embedded with a colloidal gel to stop bleeding. Or even a wet gauze pad to prevent a wound bed from drying out (it slows healing). A secondary dressing is one used to hold the primary in place. So, using the telfa pad example, yo would place the telfa directly on the laceration or abrasion or mild burn on the arm. Then you would use kurlex, or cling or even a triangular bandage as a secondary dressing to secure the telfa pad in place and prevent it from moving, it would also apply subtle local pressure to the injury site to slow bleeding.
