Best wound care product for horses?

My horse tryed to jump the waterer and didn't make it.He caught his knee on the edge and ripped a huge gash in his leg (down to his knee). The vet sticthed it and then he ripped the stiches out two days later. He has me spraying with water to clean it and then using scarlet oil to keep it moist.I just thougt there has to be something better out there.

Believe it or not, you can use Neosporin. I prefer water based ointments so you can wash the stuff off when you need too, although I have used Corona Ointment and like the results.

Furizone is also great stuff. If you are friends with the vet, see if you can purchase an aerosol can of the stuff. It looks like neon spray paint, but it is wonderful.

My new stud...had him 3 days...gashed his left leg below the knee, and I too, got to go to the vet last week for stitches.

I'm doing the hosing every day as well, and it is a challenge. I use pymethrin to keep the flies away. Pyranah fly spray works great too.

Not sure why vets don't recommend vetrap anymore. I used to ALWAYS cover injuries...seems they no longer recommend it.

Ask Barbaro.

All seriousness aside, since women started using Mane & Tale, I've heard that horses are now using Head & Shoulders.

You need to have your horse put down. Don't let him suffer like that.

dont put him down...the best stuff that i use is an oinment called corona...u can get it from tractor supply or any other place like that...it comes in a yellow squeez bottle or in a little plastic bowl...ITS THE BEST!!!!!trust me!!!!

I use household detol mixed with water to clean the wound. Also I use Irodine & fly repelent spray. It is important to keep the horse in a small yard or stable to restrict movement. Make sure the wound gets aired if you are bandaging the leg & keep hosing it down with fresh clean water. Also give the horse some beaut. in their feed if he/she is in pain.

corona
water-proof and very effective
any tack supply store should have it

I LOVE Furacin and Green Cream.
Furacin or Nitrafurzone promotes healing and prevents/combats infection. It can come in a liquid or a goop. I have the liquid and just apply it to a gauze pad and then put it over the wound, wrap a layer of gauze wrap overtop, and then your regular bandage. Once the wound is free from infection and has healed to a point where proud flesh is starting you can switch to Green Cream.

To be honest, I don't even know if they sell the stuff at tack stores as our vet makes it and packages it for sale. It promotes healing and prevents/combats proudflesh. It is non-toxic and even ingestible (therefore it's great for unwrapped wounds as well).

I am currently using these products on my stally's badly cut up leg (no stitches). Although it became infected the Furacin cleared it up in no time and now the green cream is working its magic...I am impressed daily.

Good luck!

Plain water is great, and scarlet oil is a very good simple
anti-bacterial. It sounds to me like you have a good plan.
You want to put the least caustic stuff possible on it, so it will heal cleanly. You can use Corona if you'd like a good ointment to help cover the wound up,and if you have trouble with flies the SWAT fly ointment.

And if you start to see proud flesh starting the vet will give you some special ointment to keep it in check.
The best way to keep proud flesh from making your horse's healing process more complicated is to treat the wound as gently as possible, and that means plain water and scarlet oil!

corona works wonders. :)

DON"T put him down! My mare cut herself open a couple times. The 2nd time it was down through the muscle. She had to be stitched inside & out. I hosed it out a couple times a day to keep it clean & used neosporin or nitrofurazone (not sure how to spell that). The main thing is to keep it moist so it heals up nicer. Less chance of scaring & "proud flesh". My mare healed up so nice you can't even tell where it was. My vet says vaseline is better than nothing!

try S.W.A.T. good luck with getting that cut healed
